Electromagnetism (Maxwell's equations) are most often taught using vector calculus.

I have read that both geometric algebra and differential forms are ways to simplify the material.

What are some advantages or disadvantages of each approach, compared to each other and to traditional vector calculus? Are there specific examples of operations or calculations that can be done easily with one formalism, but not the other?

    Geometric Algebra/Calculus is arguably slightly more elegant for this purpose, but Differential Forms is probably much more common in books/papers. Why not learn both? – Mark S. Mar 19 '22 at 02:52

    Had Clifford lived longer, his algebra might have become the dominant approach. Since geometric algebra is nowadays gaining more prominence, more people are teaching it and it is becoming easier to find textbooks about it. –  Mar 19 '22 at 03:26

This is a pretty tough question to answer without subjective bias. To arm the reader to weigh the pros and cons, I will attempt a summary of the relationships between some of the formalisms that are available for the student, focusing on the representations of Maxwell's equation (or equations, as applicable.) This will include two geometric algebra representations (one using a Euclidean spatial basis, and another using a relativistic four-vector basis), as well as the tensor formalism (used extensively for electromagnetism applications where their relativistic nature is important), and a relativistic differential forms representation.

Other formalisms that will not be detailed here include Euclidean differential forms (mentioned in [3]), quaternion representations ([5]), and geometric algebra "paravector" representations that presents special relativity using a Euclidean four-vector basis and special complex-number like operators ([1], [8]).

Vector form.

I'll restrict the discussion to linear isotropic media, for which Maxwell's equations have the form $$\begin{aligned} \boldsymbol{\nabla} \times \mathbf{E} &= - \frac{\partial {\mathbf{B}}}{\partial {t}} \\ \boldsymbol{\nabla} \times \mathbf{B} &= \mu \mathbf{J} + \epsilon \mu \frac{\partial {\mathbf{E}}}{\partial {t}} \\ \boldsymbol{\nabla} \cdot \mathbf{E} &= \frac{1}{{\epsilon}} \rho \\ \boldsymbol{\nabla} \cdot \mathbf{B} &= 0.\end{aligned}$$ It will be useful to cast our derivative operators and fields in a dimensionally consistent way. With $ \eta = \sqrt{\mu/\epsilon} $, and $ c = 1/\sqrt{\mu\epsilon} $, we have $$\begin{aligned} \boldsymbol{\nabla} \times \mathbf{E} &= - \frac{1}{{c}} \frac{\partial {(c \mathbf{B})}}{\partial {t}} \\ \boldsymbol{\nabla} \times ( c\mathbf{B} ) &= \eta \mathbf{J} + \frac{1}{{c}} \frac{\partial {\mathbf{E}}}{\partial {t}} \\ \boldsymbol{\nabla} \cdot \mathbf{E} &= \eta c \rho \\ \boldsymbol{\nabla} \cdot (c \mathbf{B}) &= 0.\end{aligned}$$

Geometric algebra (Euclidean spatial basis.)

Using the identity $ \mathbf{a} \mathbf{b} = \mathbf{a} \cdot \mathbf{b} + I \left( { \mathbf{a} \times \mathbf{b} } \right) $, where $ I = \mathbf{e}_1 \mathbf{e}_2 \mathbf{e}_3 $ we can merge the cross and dot products for each of the fields above, and form a gradient equation for each of $ \mathbf{E}, \mathbf{B} $ $$\begin{aligned} \boldsymbol{\nabla} \mathbf{E} &= \eta c \rho - \frac{1}{{c}} I \frac{\partial {( c \mathbf{B})}}{\partial {t}} \\ I \boldsymbol{\nabla} ( c\mathbf{B} ) &= -\eta \mathbf{J} - \frac{1}{{c}} \frac{\partial {\mathbf{E}}}{\partial {t}}.\end{aligned}$$ Adding these and regrouping slightly yields Maxwell's equation (singular) in multivector form $$ \left( { \boldsymbol{\nabla} + \frac{1}{{c}} \frac{\partial {}}{\partial {t}} } \right) \left( { \mathbf{E} + I c \mathbf{B} } \right) = \eta \left( { c \rho - \mathbf{J} } \right).$$ The electric and magnetic fields are grouped into single variable with vector and bivector components $$ F = \mathbf{E} + I c \mathbf{B},$$ and the sources are grouped into a single multivector current with scalar and vector components $$ J = \eta \left( { c \rho - \mathbf{J} } \right).$$ This pretties up Maxwell's equation slightly, which we can now write as just $$ \left( { \boldsymbol{\nabla} + \frac{1}{{c}} \frac{\partial {}}{\partial {t}} } \right) F = J.$$ Note that one can recover each of the original Maxwell's equations by grade selection, as there is a scalar, vector, bivector, and trivector grade of this equation, each of which corresponds to one of the original vector Maxwell's equations.

Demonstrating how to work with Maxwell's equation in this form is beyond the scope of this answer. Interested readers are referred to [6]. This is not an unbiased recommendation (i.e.: it is my book), it is, however, available for free in pdf form.

Geometric algebra (STA, the Spacetime algebra.)

Maxwell's equation in the form above used a Euclidean spatial basis. In Maxwell's equation, the space and time derivative operator ($ \boldsymbol{\nabla} + (1/c) \partial/\partial_t $) is a strong hint of a relativistic structure, where time and space and aspects of a single story. We can call this out using an explicitly relativistic notation, but there is unfortunately some additional baggage required.

We utilize the Dirac basis $ \left\{ { \gamma_0, \gamma_1, \gamma_2, \gamma_3 } \right\} $. These four-vector basis elements are commonly used in relativistic quantum theory, where they have various matrix representations, but always satisfy the conditions $$ \frac{1}{{2}} \left( { \gamma_\mu \gamma_\nu + \gamma_\nu \gamma_\mu } \right) = g_{\mu\nu}.$$ Specifically, $$ \gamma_0 \gamma_0 = 1 = -\gamma_k \gamma_k, \forall k \in {1,2,3}$$ and $$ \gamma_\mu \gamma_\nu = - \gamma_\nu \gamma_\mu \forall \mu \ne \nu,$$ where following relativistic conventions, we use Greek indices to represent values $ 0, 1,2,3 $, and Latin indices for $ 1,2,3 $.

In geometric algebra terms, this is nothing more than the specification of the dot product, and a statement that perpendicular vectors anticommute. We are free to use the Dirac basis, as specified above, without caring about implementation specific issues, like any of the possible matrix representations. A geometric algebra constructed in this fashion using the Dirac basis is referred to as SpaceTime Algebra (STA). I will attempt a compact overview of how it can be used to formulate Maxwell's equations.

It is useful to define a reciprocal basis $ \left\{ { \gamma^0, \gamma^1, \gamma^2, \gamma^3 } \right\} $, satisfying $ \gamma^\mu \cdot \gamma_\nu = {\delta^\mu}_\nu $, or $ \gamma^0 = \gamma_0, \gamma^k = -\gamma_k $. A four vector in STA then has the structure $$ x = x_\mu \gamma^\mu = x^\mu \gamma_\mu,$$ where $ x_\mu = x \cdot \gamma_\mu $ and $ x^\mu = x \cdot \gamma^\mu $.

If an observer has worldline $ c t \gamma_0 $, we say that this observer is stationary in the $ \gamma_0 $ frame, and can utilize dot and wedge products with $ \gamma_0 $ to determine the timelike and spacelike components of a four vector with respect to that frame. For example, given a four vector velocity $$ v = \gamma \frac{dx^0}{dt} \gamma_0 + \gamma \frac{dx^k}{dt} \gamma_k$$ the timelike component of this four vector from a stationary observer frame is $$v \cdot \gamma_0 = \gamma \frac{dx^0}{dt},$$ and the spatial component of this four vector from a stationary observer frame is $$v \wedge \gamma_0 = \gamma \frac{dx^0}{dt} \gamma_k \gamma_0.$$ We write this as $$ v = \left( { v_0 + \mathbf{v} } \right) \gamma_0,$$ where our spatial vector $ \mathbf{v} $ is represented with a bivector basis $ \left\{ { \gamma_k \gamma_0 } \right\} $. The student of QFT may recognize such bivectors as a representation of the "Pauli" basis elements, which all square to one, just like the $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ Euclidean basis elements $ \left\{ { \mathbf{e}_1, \mathbf{e}_2, \mathbf{e}_3 } \right\} $.

The take away of all of this is that we represent spatial quantities in STA using the bivectors representing unit space-time planes. Let's see how such a $ \mathbf{e}_k = \gamma_k \gamma_0 $ representation transforms each of the terms in Maxwell's equations $ \boldsymbol{\nabla} + {\partial {}}/{\partial {x_0}} $, $ F = \mathbf{E} + I c \mathbf{B} $, and $ J = \eta\left( { c \rho - \mathbf{J} } \right) $.

We start with the spatial pseudoscalar (for $F$) $$ I = \mathbf{e}_1 \mathbf{e}_2 \mathbf{e}_3 = (\gamma_1 \gamma_0) (\gamma_2 \gamma_0)(\gamma_3 \gamma_0),$$ can be reduced to $$ I = \gamma_0 \gamma_1 \gamma_2 \gamma_3,$$ which now has the form of an STA unit pseudoscalar, now a product of the four basis elements. Unlike the $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ pseudoscalar with commutes with all spatial vectors, it is worth noting that the STA pseudoscalar anticommutes with all four-vectors.

Plugging this into the Maxwell field, we have $$\begin{aligned}F&= \gamma_k \gamma_0 E^k + c \gamma_0 \gamma_1 \gamma_2 \gamma_3 \gamma_k \gamma_0 B^k \\ &= \gamma_k \gamma_0 E^k + c \gamma_1 \gamma_2 \gamma_3 \gamma_k B^k.\end{aligned}$$ The electric field component of $ F $ (really the electric field component of $ F $ with respect to the stationary observer frame $ \gamma_0 $), is a space-time bivector, whereas the magnetic contribution to the total field is an STA spatial bivector. Specifically $$ F = \gamma_k \gamma_0 E^k - c \left( { \gamma_2 \gamma_3 B^1 + \gamma_3 \gamma_1 B^2 + \gamma_1 \gamma_2 B^3 } \right).$$ We have one component for each of the six STA unit bivectors. We can write this out in coordinates as $$ F = \frac{1}{{2}} \gamma_\mu \wedge \gamma_\nu F^{\mu\nu} = \sum_{\mu < \nu} \gamma_\mu \wedge \gamma_\nu F^{\mu\nu}.$$ where $ F^{\mu\nu} $ is a completely antisymmetric tensor. The reader can verify that the electric and magnetic field components of this bivector valued field can be picked off with $$\begin{aligned} \mathbf{E} &= \frac{1}{{2}} \left( { F - \gamma_0 F \gamma_0 } \right) \\ I c \mathbf{B} &= \frac{1}{{2}} \left( { F + \gamma_0 F \gamma_0 } \right),\end{aligned}$$ which again highlights the fact that the electric and magnetic fields are observer dependent quantities.

In STA, we write Maxwell's equation as $$ \gamma_0 \left( { \boldsymbol{\nabla} + \frac{\partial {}}{\partial {x_0}} } \right) F = \gamma_0 \eta \left( { c \rho - \mathbf{J} } \right).$$ Let's perform those multiplications to see why this is desirable. We will see that the multivector space-time derivative and the multivector current are both reduced to particularly simple four-vectors forms. For the derivatives, we have $$\begin{aligned} \gamma_0 \left( { \gamma_k \gamma_0 \frac{\partial {}}{\partial {x^k}} + \frac{\partial {}}{\partial {x_0}} } \right) &= -\gamma_k \frac{\partial {}}{\partial {x^k}} + \frac{\partial {}}{\partial {x_0}} \gamma_0 \\ &= \gamma^k \frac{\partial {}}{\partial {x^k}} + \frac{\partial {}}{\partial {x_0}} \gamma^0 \\ &= \gamma^\mu \partial_\mu.\end{aligned}$$ where $ \partial_\mu \equiv {\partial {}}/{\partial {x^\mu}} $. We call this the spacetime gradient and designate it with a non-boldface nabla symbol $ \nabla $. The multivector current is transformed similarly $$\begin{aligned} \gamma_0 \eta \left( { c \rho - \mathbf{J} } \right) = \gamma_0 \eta \left( { c \rho - \gamma_k \gamma_0 J^k } \right) = \eta \left( { \gamma_0 c \rho + \gamma_k J^k } \right)\end{aligned}$$ We write this as a four vector $$ J = J^\mu \gamma_\mu,$$ where $ J^\mu = (\eta c\rho, \eta J^k) $. This leaves us with a spectacularly compact representation of Maxwell's equation $$ \nabla F = J.$$

There is considerable literature available for STA, examples of which include [2] and [4]. A good supplementary reference for the basics of special relativity, such as [7] is also recommended.

Tensor formalism.

The STA representation of Maxwell's equation is readily converted into tensor form. To do so, note that $$ \nabla F = \nabla \cdot F + \nabla \cdot F = J,$$ represents two equations, a trivector equation $$ \nabla \wedge F = 0,$$ and a vector equation $$ \nabla \cdot F = J.$$

The tensor forms of both follow from expansion in coordinates. First, for the trivector equation, we have $$\begin{aligned} 0 &= \nabla \wedge F \\ &= \left( { \gamma^\nu \partial_\nu } \right) \wedge \frac{1}{{2}} \gamma^\alpha \wedge \gamma^\sigma F_{\alpha\sigma} \\ &= \frac{1}{{2}} \left( { \gamma^\nu \wedge \gamma^\alpha \wedge \gamma^\sigma } \right) \partial_\nu F_{\alpha\sigma}.\end{aligned}$$ Wedging once more with $ \gamma^\mu $ gives us a grade-4 equation $$\begin{aligned}0 &=\frac{1}{{2}} \left( { \gamma^\mu \wedge \gamma^\nu \wedge \gamma^\alpha \wedge \gamma^\sigma } \right) \partial_\nu F_{\alpha\sigma} \\ &= -\frac{I}{2} \epsilon^{\mu\nu\alpha\sigma} \partial_\nu F_{\alpha\sigma},\end{aligned}$$ where $ \epsilon^{\mu\nu\alpha\sigma} $ is the completely antisymmetric Levi-Civita symbol. We may write this in scalar form as $$ \epsilon^{\mu\nu\alpha\sigma} \partial_\nu F_{\alpha\sigma} = 0,$$ This includes both of the non-source Maxwell's equations ($ \boldsymbol{\nabla} \cdot B = 0 $, and $ \boldsymbol{\nabla} \times \mathbf{E} = - {\partial {\mathbf{B}}}/{\partial {t}} $) as special cases.

To expand the sources term of Maxwell's equation in coordinates, first note that $$\begin{aligned} \nabla \cdot F &= \frac{1}{{2}} \gamma^\mu \partial_\mu \cdot \left( { \gamma_\alpha \wedge \gamma_\beta } \right) F^{\alpha\beta} \\ &= \frac{1}{{2}} \gamma^\mu \cdot \left( { \gamma_\alpha \wedge \gamma_\beta } \right) \partial_\mu F^{\alpha\beta} \\ &= \frac{1}{{2}} \left( { \gamma_\beta {\delta^\mu}_\alpha - \gamma_\alpha {\delta^\mu}_\beta } \right) \partial_\mu F^{\alpha\beta} \\ &= \frac{1}{{2}} \left( { \gamma_\beta \partial_\mu F^{\mu\beta} - \gamma_\alpha \partial_\mu F^{\alpha\mu} } \right) \\ &= \gamma_\beta \partial_\mu F^{\mu\beta}.\end{aligned}$$ Now dotting both sides of $ \nabla \cdot F = J $ with $ \gamma^\nu $, gives us $$\begin{aligned}J^\nu&=(\gamma^\nu \cdot \gamma_\beta) \partial_\mu F^{\mu\beta} \\ &={\delta^\nu}_\beta \partial_\mu F^{\mu\beta} \\ &=\partial_\mu F^{\mu\nu}.\end{aligned}$$ This incorporates Gauss's law $ \boldsymbol{\nabla} \cdot \mathbf{E} = \rho/\epsilon $, and the Maxwell-Faraday equation $ \boldsymbol{\nabla} \times \mathbf{B} = \mu \mathbf{J} + \epsilon \mu {\partial {\mathbf{E}}}/{\partial {t}} $ into a single relationship, and we may write all of Maxwell's equations together as $$\begin{aligned} \partial_\mu F^{\mu\nu} &= J^\nu \\ \epsilon^{\mu\nu\alpha\sigma} \partial_\nu F_{\alpha\sigma} &= 0.\end{aligned}$$

Differential forms (relativistic.)

The STA formalism may also be readily translated to the language of differential forms. For our field $$ F = \frac{1}{{2}} \gamma^\mu \wedge \gamma^\nu F_{\mu\nu},$$ we have only to replace the $ \gamma^\alpha $'s with differential elements $ dx^\alpha$'s, so the 2-form for the field is $$ F = \frac{1}{{2}} dx^\mu \wedge dx^\nu F_{\mu\nu}.$$ The differential forms operator $ d $ is isomorphic to $ \nabla \wedge $, so the first of Maxwell's equations in its differential forms representation is just $$ d F = 0.$$ To deal with our $ \nabla \cdot F = J $ contribution to Maxwell's equation, we have a bit of a problem, since we want three forms, but have vectors. We can solve that my rescaling Maxwell's equation by the pseudoscalar, and then selecting just the grade three component $$\begin{aligned}I J&= {\left\langle{{ I \nabla F }}\right\rangle}_{3} \\ &= {\left\langle{{ \nabla (-I F) }}\right\rangle}_{3} \\ &= \nabla \wedge (-I F).\end{aligned}$$ We want differential forms representations for both $ I J $ and the bivector $ -I F $. First $$\begin{aligned}I J&=\gamma_0 \gamma_1 \gamma_2 \gamma_3 \gamma^\mu J_\mu \\ &=\gamma_0 \gamma_1 \gamma_2 J_3-\gamma_0 \gamma_1 \gamma_3 J_2+\gamma_0 \gamma_2 \gamma_3 J_1-\gamma_1 \gamma_2 \gamma_3 J_0 \\ &=\gamma^0 \gamma^1 \gamma^2 J_3-\gamma^0 \gamma^1 \gamma^3 J_2+\gamma^0 \gamma^2 \gamma^3 J_1+\gamma^1 \gamma^2 \gamma^3 J_0,\end{aligned}$$ and for the dual field, we have $$\begin{aligned} -I F = -I \left( { \mathbf{E} + I c \mathbf{B} } \right) = c \mathbf{B} - I \mathbf{E} = c \gamma_k \gamma_0 B^k + \gamma_1 \gamma_2 E^3 + \gamma_2 \gamma_3 E^1 + \gamma_3 \gamma_1 E^3,\end{aligned}$$ so we may write $$ d(*F) = J,$$ where $$ *F = -c dx^k dx^0 B^k + dx^1 dx^2 E^3 + dx^2 dx^3 E^1 + dx^3 dx^1 E^3,$$ and $$ J = dx^1 dx^2 dx^3 \rho/\epsilon - \eta dx^0 \left( { dx^1 dx^2 J^3 + dx^2 dx^3 J^1 + dx^3 dx^1 J^2 } \right).$$ Here I've used $*F$ as a symbol representing the dual. In GA the dual of a multivector $ M $ is $ \pm I M $, where the sign convention varies. In differential forms the duality operation is performed with $*$, which is called the Hodge-star operator, which has a specific meaning. I don't know if the sign conventions for Hodge-star operations varies in the differential forms literature as they do for GA, but what I've written above happens to match [3] (which has a cursory overview of Maxwell's equations in relativistic and Euclidean differential forms representations.)

Summary

I've attempted to demonstrate how a number of Maxwell's equations representations are related. This included the connections between the vector, geometric algebra, tensor, and differential forms representations.

Some considerations for picking what to use include:

  • Both of the geometric algebra representations above, merge Maxwell's equation into a single equation. One argument for the utility of such an equation is that the spacetime gradient is an invertible operator, allowing for a direct Green's function representation of the solution without first resorting to solving the system with potentials.
  • Use of potentials is somewhat ugly in the multivector form of Maxwell's equation, but very slick in the STA formalism (where the field is represented in terms of a four-potential $A$ as just $ F = \nabla \wedge A $.
  • The STA, tensor, and differential forms representations of Maxwell's equations above all carry some relativistic baggage. That toolbox comes with a learning curve, but also provides significant power.
  • In both tensor and differential forms, Maxwell's equations are both represented as two equations, one for the source terms and one for the non-source terms. Both are scalar equations in the tensor representation, and both are 3-form equations with differential forms.
  • Considerable work is required to master any of these. If you choose GA or differential forms, you'll probably also have to also learn the tensor, or vector formalism, or both.

    Excellent answer. My personal favorite starting point is Discrete Exterior Calculus. Of course a great place to start if you are interested in numerical simulation; but also I think objectively the simplest, least machinery-intensive manner, of being able to grasp the logic and intuition behind grad(F)=J – Eelco Hoogendoorn Mar 21 '22 at 20:13
