I am an electrical engineer. There were a few mathematics courses that were needed as part of my engineering degree. But that was more than 25 years ago. I got interested in mathematics about 10 years ago in a strange sequence of events. Now I spend time trying to come up with closed forms of expressions that don't currently have one. As such it's a draining exercise and near guaranteed to not yield any result. But I have learned a lot in this process and have independently rediscovered a few results in unusual ways. I frequently use Fourier Transforms in my attempts, whether it is really the appropriate tool for the situation or not.

Regarding this site:

  1. If as a site, you don't want to deal with homework questions etc, then don't insist on the question-answer format so religiously. The moment you see someone veer ever so slightly into a discussion in their question, you (as as a community) down vote, close and in other ways discourage that. You're setting up yourself for homework questions with your approach.
  2. I find it bizarre that many people here are averse to helping an individual with their specific math problem because they want the site to be helpful for a lot of people by being a library of curated questions and answers and not being a help desk. That's like shooing away a poor person who approaches you in a street corner, hungry and looking for a buck because you only donate to charities that work towards feeding the poor. You see the irony?
  3. Stop closing threads in a hurry. Stop down voting without comments. Be decent.

ps: The more you go to Meta and try to challenge the status quo, the more the likelihood of some users to go to your profile and find questions/answers to down-vote. If you value your rep points, my friendly advise to a new member is to stay in the main site and enjoy the mathematics.
