I was a post-doc and assistant prof in the MIT and Brandeis math departments for six years, then jumped ship and worked on efficient algorithms in computational biology and speech recognition before settling in to a job with Google (what a place to work!). I still keep in touch with my math background: I'm the co-editor of the Entertainments column in the Mathematical Intelligencer.
